I got some good news yesterday, on my half birthday: an all-clear biopsy. It has been a few weeks of trying-not-to-worry worry (with one especially bad day in which I inadvertently got signed up for a cancer study before I had heard from my doctor). So even though today I’m on the downward slope of the year, barreling towards 40 at a breakneck speed, the possibility of getting older and then old and then maybe even old as the hills feels precious and wondrous. Yesterday's valentine's day activity: counter-hegemonic love scrabble! How to play: Each counter-hegemonic love word gets an extra 10 points. The person that lays down the word makes a case for it and the others decide whether or not they are convinced. There has to be consensus in order to get the extra points, but players should err on the side of openness to the word so as to get a wide sense of counter-hegemonic love possibilities. Snow day! And subu upandinak weava today to Saku, who in Sri Lanka is as far away from a snow day as you can get. When I called her today she was on her way to the ocean for a midnight swim with a big gang of family and friends. She promised to ride a birthday wave for me and I took a birthday sled ride for her. Had dinner tonight with T & J who, upon hearing that I’d never seen The Killing of Saint George, proceeded to pull out a box containing what seemed like every lesbian movie ever made. Here’s what they lent me to get me started on a queer videothon weekend: Maedchen in Uniform Pinky Show Me Love Casting Stones Meeting of the Queens L is for the Way you Look What’s Cooking The Haunting Foxfire Hide and Seek Girls’ Town They also cautioned me against seeing Notes on A Scandal, saying it was unrelentingly homophobic. Columbus as the promised land I hated to miss MM’s bday bash last weekend which from all accounts sounds like a fantastic time. I had two lovely visitors come see me here in Ohio though so I can’t mope too much. Maddie was just thrilled to be here—she came prepared with had a long list of “plans” that she wanted to do while she was here that included trips to all our old haunts, a joyous reunion with her best friend that lives down the hall, and a pre-birthday party at the ice cream store where we celebrated her b-day last year. The one aspect of the trip that didn’t quite fit her picture of Columbus was my housemate Caroline who is living in her old room. “Caroline is a mystery,” she whispered to me after meeting her. The other thing that she did that cracked me up is gather up a bag full of crazy stuff from my office (a big clock, markers galore, a paper clip container) that she would carry all over the place-- she called it her “possibility bag." Every morning while she was here, her first words upon waking were “Yahoo!” It is great to be 3 going on 4 I think. |
