That’s O below, with her little son, when they were visiting. This weekend comes Jen up from SF, another close friend from college (This summer has been a bonanza of college friend visits!) Though Jen & I had been friends before, we really got close when she & her girlfriend (they were the only lesbian couple I knew) came to live in my house for a couple of weeks after their apartment building burned down. By day, we’d hang out after class and play pool & by night we’d have parties. But my favorite part of that stay was the way Jen would read poetry to us before we went to bed. Poetry! Parties! Pool! Wide-eyed and innocent, that’s what this new thing called dyke life seemed to me to be about back then. Anyway, together she & I and some other people organized this hysterical bad poetry reading/contest at school (I still have a poem from it that cracked me up & if I can find it I’ll blog it)—which got me thinking that that could be a good capgas activity—bad poetry reading anyone??? At long last, Everyday Maddie is back (although I think it should be renamed “once in a while Maddie”! Not to steal the thunder from her own blog, here are some pictures of her playing her new favorite game “smother myself and smile”—loosely based on “peekaboo” but more edgy. Here’s how it goes. First, I put her down on the bed for a nap with her blanket for comfort. After I’ve settled down to do some work at the desk, she quietly grabs her little blanket and pulls it over her face. Next, she starts to breathe heavily and kick her legs with the excitement of it all. I turn around and here’s what I see:
Panicked with the possibility of her heavy breathing being her last desperate gasps of air, I jump up from the computer and pull the blanket off of her face, only to find her grinning hugely, like so:
The irresistibleness of her smile + relef that she’s okay causes me to kiss her, thus reinforcing this heart-attack inducing game. And sure enough, when I sit back down to get back to work, only a minute or so goes by until I hear the tell-tale heavy breathing and kicking again. And so it goes over and over again—the first glimmers of her becoming a real character from charactersville. Sunday, July 13, 2003
My old college roommate, first (unrequited) love, and dear dear friend Olivia and her family were here in town this week-- we had a such a nice time together, what felt like the closest in a while. She met L for the first time, and I felt at ease and so happy to see her. Its funny, but I think because she is so central to my "coming out" story, the narrative that I tell about her centers her role in my life as the first woman to whom I felt an attraction too strong not to notice or to name, but misses all the other things over so many years that we were to each other. Seeing her, and feeling so close again, brings all those things back to me—our relationships with each other's families, shared jokes and memories, the way our world views & tastes developed in concert and in conversation with one another. With K, I raise a toast to friendship. Monday, July 07, 2003
Damn, I got close to success but I couldn't find the email that Rick sent us with the password so I wasn't able finish the transfer to capgas. Another reason to anxiously await their return. I ran into Ace in the grocery store on Friday "Everyone's gone but me" he said with a despair in his voice that I could relate to, even though they're not my relations. Anyway, to help pass the time before their return and the blog updates about all the adventures in montreal, I'm gonna try to switch my blog to capgas. org. Here goes. |
