So far Dana Nelson’s National Manhood: Capitalist Citizenship and the Imagined Fraternity of White Men has been the book that has provoked the most lively discussions in my class this quarter. Here's an excerpt: Presidentialism works symbolically and institutionally in the US to route democratic energies into the affective containment structures—the melancholic esprit de corpse-- of national manhood. Alternative possibilities and practices (and even our ability to imagine those possibilities) get blocked by the system we are in the habit of giving our consent to… Our constitutionally conditioned habit of looking to the President has trained us to vest our desires in him for what we might otherwise see all around us (204). |
