Ten Things about June & Me: A Companion Piece to June's “100 Things”: (In honor of her birthday tomorrow) 1. I met her in DC in 1989, when I was fresh out of college and interning at a feminist newspaper collective. Most of the time it was just her & me in that skinny Adams-Morgan office piled high with old copies of the paper. 2. In the office, June turned me on to the typing tutor game on the computer that revolutionized my writing life. I never did beat her high score though. 3. June: dyke about town--her resemblance to Alison Bechdel’s Mo is reportedly more than coincidental--who’d spend hours on the office phone with her friends talking and laughing about all their goings on (although, according to thing #48, she supposedly hates talking on the phone now). Me: new dyke on the scene, still living at home with my mom & brothers, totally starstruck by her life. 4. Those days, June had trouble waking up in the morning and would often amble in even later than sleep-in me. For a while, she was getting acupuncture to help her wake up in the morning. I thought that was the funniest thing ever, second only to the crazy “colon cleansing” diet that she’d try years later. 5. After that summer, June left the US for England & Spain & I left for Sri Lanka. It would be years before we’d see each other again. 6. When I first got to Seattle for grad school in 1995, June was one of the only two people I knew here. She introduced me to her friends Christy & Paloma. Most every weekend for a few years there, you could catch us all together dancing & drinking on the town. 7. I stayed in her apartment one night after a night on the town and got attacked by her cat who June admits in Thing #88 can “be a little aggressive.” Eventually, June took her (I think it is a her) to a pet psychic who told her that the problem was that the cat didn’t like being called “Spanky.” June renamed her “Sukie” to supposedly very good effect. 8. Our raucous dancing & drinking crowd has been reduced to a once-in-a-while meet for a sedate brunch gang. Old age? New girlfriends for us all? New baby for me? Tevo? Who knows, but it’s still darn fun when we all get together. 9. At June’s birthday party last Friday, I was the proud winner of the “who has known June the longest at this party” contest. 10. I love the fact that her parents named her June even though she was born in July (did she oversleep in the womb as well?) Monday, July 19, 2004
Two new websites: One on the happy side: June's blog! One on the morbid side: the death clock. Uh oh. Friday, July 16, 2004
Feeling good after a visit to the dentist today; I've got squeaky clean teeth now and a girlfriend whose soul is finally at rest after weeks of escalating-to-a-worried-frenzy dentist fear. Friday, July 09, 2004
Last night we said goodbye to Kristen, as she & David get ready to make their way towards South Carolina. Their empty apartment, bruised arms from moving, and discussions of best ways to cross the country felt like the start of a migration that I will be a part of. Today, after hanging out and talking about New York with lovely Olivia (whose voice and easy way mainlines to my heart—-then in a transfixing way, now in a settling into a wonderful couch way), I feel my own anchor here shifting, loosening. The countdown begins: 6 more weeks. Friday, July 02, 2004
Wow—its Friday already, almost two weeks now since Geoff & G’ma died on that awful one-two punch of a weekend. Things still seem a bit unreal and I find myself spacing out a lot, but mostly things are better thanks to hugs galore, M’s glorious hammock, the comfort of work, and maddie’s small hands in mine holding tight as she learns to walk. ![]() Hey, has anyone else noticed the wierd phenomenon of lots of butt-cherries this year? ![]() |
