Speaking of Reagan, I never did meet him, but I did have three close calls. The first was before he was inaugurated--A & I came home one day & he & Nancy were at the W.H. checking out their new digs. We didn't realize he was there but there was an article in the newspaper the next day about it (A & friend surprise Reagans!) The next was on inauguration day itself when we watched them come into the house from A's window-- that was a very sad day. The last one was my favorite one. It was a couple of years after his election & A was up visiting for the summer. We went to the W.H. to say hello to our old friends (the cooks, the ushers etc) and this new guy there gave us a kinda formal tour. We were a little bit bored but went along with it. On our way out after the tour, however, we made a break for it. We ran to the family elevator (it is close to the way out) and rode it up to the 2nd floor family quarters. Giggling away, we snuck all over the house, checking out A's old room (Nancy had converted that huge room-- the size of my whole house right now--into her WARDROBE CLOSET... we were horrified), raiding the kitchen refrigerator, and best of all, stealing handfuls of jellybeans from a special vase on their bedroom desk! |
