I was so surprised to open the paper yesterday and see there, on the front page, a picture of my Uncle Bill! It was a great article, all about my Uncle Bill's relationship with a dying man that he worked with as a doula. The article really captured my uncle's affable, easygoing, and generous character but sadly it didn't do too well by my father-- here's the troubling passage:

He [my uncle] wasn't into deep philosophical thought. Death was death. Then 66--he had had more than enough of its bitter taste. His entire family was gone. Both parents were dead, and his two brothers had died young, one at 15 of polio, his last days spent encased in an iron lung, and the other one at 17. He had been going to football camp, but missed the bus and hitched a ride in a truck that turned over.

That tragic story is true, unfortunately, but not complete. There were four brothers altogether-- my father the youngest. And he may be deadbeat, but he ain't dead!
