K's migraine Ralph reminds me of another anthropomorphized figure named Ralph—the most compelling character in Judy Blume's book Forever! I don't know about you all but in the late 70s that book was a big source of our DIY sex ed. I remember that when we were about 11 or 12, my friend Amy and I furtively went to the local bookstore to get a copy and the bookstore manager called over the secret service guys (thinking they were our clueless parents?) and told them that the book might not be appropriate for children our age. They didn't mention the exchange to us, but when we got home, they told Amy's mom who took the book and told us that she was going to read it first to check it out. Having read (what seemed like then as) the juicy sex passages with the wild girls at school we knew what she--and then the two of us--were in for, Ralph and all. We wanted to flee to the Himalayas, but had no choice but to suffer through the ½ hour or so until she returned with the sternest face imaginable. She was shocked at the book and was going to confiscate it—not throw it away, but keep it until we were older. We were mortified, but the consequences part of the punishment gave us hope that we could still get our hands on it. And sure enough, next time they were away we scoured the house until we found it. We'd read it and carefully put it back in its hiding place—the surreptitiousness of it all making it extra, extra thrilling! |
