Well the valentine’s day marriage resistor band thing went pretty well! My housemate Astrid was a particular fan—she had just hand her hand operated on so she proudly put hers on her cast. When people asked what it was about I offered them one (like it was a flower) and got some interesting responses—one that made me really think was an older woman who told me that she would like to wear one but couldn’t because she was “bribed by the health insurance system to get married” so it was too late. Her comment gave me a real which-comes-first chicken or the egg headache. Do conservatives argue against universal health care coverage because they worry that people wouldn’t get married as much (perhaps following the trend in Europe )? Or do they push marriage so hard to reduce the pressure on them to expand health care? Anyway, there were some technical difficulties with the bands—I made them out of strips cut up from a t-shirt and they kept curling up so you couldn’t read the writing on them and also they fell off if you moved your arm vigorously (like if you hoisted your no war sign higher when people honked to register their anti-war sentiment & support for the 500+ strong march in South Bend!) Next year I’m gonna make the bands out of garter belts. |
